Firefighter Dylan Van Rooyen is to receive a Medal of Good Citizenship

A South Surrey firefighter is to be honoured for his volunteer efforts Tuesday, with a Medal of Good Citizenship.

Dylan Van Rooyen is to receive the honour from Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services Amrik Virk in a 2:30 p.m. presentation May 31 at Surrey fire Hall 17 (15329 32 Ave.).

The award is the province's newest honour, launched by Premier Christy Clark last July. It "recognizes individuals who, through exceptional long-term service, have made outstanding contributions to their communities without expectation of remuneration or reward," a news release announcing the medal states.

"The medal reflects their generosity, service, acts of selflessness and contributions to community life."

Raised in Surrey, Van Rooyen was selected for his "inspirational leadership" with organizations and events focused on Surrey youth and families, including Child Development Foundation of British Columbia, Tong Louie Family YMCA and Surrey Fire Fighters' Charitable Society.

In the news release, issued May 25, Van Rooyen described the award as "very humbling and a true honour."

Clark said no one in B.C. is a better example of going above and beyond for their community than Rooyen.

"Not only does he put himself in harm's way as a firefighter, but has also devoted countless hours of his own time to organizations that make a difference in Surrey," she said.
