Dozens of quilts, dresses and shorts are heading to Angola this month from South Surrey, following an annual effort by quilters at Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Following weekly meetings to craft the items, the Quilting Group members produced 128 full-size quilts, 82 baby quilts, 43 girls’ “pillowcase” dresses and 25 boys’ shorts. In addition, 81 “baby bundles” were assembled for shipment.

The group transports the items to Abbotsford during “BC Baling Days” in May. There, they are compressed into “bales” for shipment.

All of the items are contributed to Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), which has been making humanitarian relief shipments since 1946.

According to a news release, the quilts and other supplies are sent through the “We Care Program,” to “provide basic necessities to those living in adverse conditions, like refugee camps and poverty-stressed regions, and in the wake of natural disasters.”

This year, the southwest Africa-based organization Hope for Angola is to be the recipient, the release states.

Anyone interested in pitching in to the quilting effort is welcome. They group meets from 9 a.m. till noon on Tuesdays, from September to May.
