When it comes to the annual dinner served up at Elgin Park Secondary every year, there are a few certainties: students and staff alike happily pitch in to make it happen; it is appreciated by those who attend; and, there will be a wait list.
"Unfortunately, we can only seat 150 people," teacher sponsor Sinead Hibbert explained.
To ensure none of those seats are inadvertently left empty, Hibbert asks that anyone who registers for the Dec. 4 meal to please contact the school if their plans to attend change, "so we can include those on the wait list."
Registration for the Community Christmas Dinner – organized "to bring some holiday cheer to those who may not otherwise have the chance to enjoy a festive dinner" – will be taken from Nov. 20-29. To sign up, call 604-538-6678 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Hibbert said the evening, being offered for the 18th year, will again feature performances by "our talented student musicians."
Younger students help prepare for the event, while those in Grades 10 to 12 serve dinner and chat with guests. Hibbert noted that this year, several extracurricular clubs are also pitching in to ensure it's a success.
As in previous years, on the night of the dinner, doors to the 13484 24 Ave. school will open to registered guests at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by dessert, and entertainment will continue through till 7:30 p.m.
