A South Surrey student's ideas for Hazmat protection was among those showcased Friday by some of the first graduates of Kwantlen Polytechnic University's product-design program.

Kirsten Taylor said the program taught her how to fail.

Hazmat design“I began my design education prepared to learn. What I didn’t realize was that I was to learn how to fail,” Taylor said in a news release. “Design is not about succeeding, but embracing struggles and constantly challenging yourself to learn from them and fall forward.”

A communication tool for autism-support teams, a breast milk-cooling thermos and a harness to enhance the performance of forest firefighters were among nine other students' ideas highlighted at the event, held at the Vancouver-based Dutch Urban Design Centre.
