A fundraiser bake sale to benefit the victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire has raised nearly $850 for the cause.

The event – held May 17 at Chantrell Creek Elementary in South Surrey – was suggested by a Grade 1 student who was "worried about all the kids, especially the ones whose bikes were burned or who don't have a playground at their school anymore," teacher Michelle de Jager told Peace Arch News by email.

Tens of thousands of Fort McMurray residents were forced to evacuate earlier this month, after fire raged through the northern Alberta city.

After talking as a class, the Chantrell Creek students invited their Grade 2 peers to get involved, made signs and hosted the sale. Xu spent an extra weekend soliciting extra donations, de Jager noted.

"It is so wonderful to see how young children can reach out and think of others!" she said.
