Student shore sweepers

White Rock Elementary students hit the beach last week to help make the waterfront cleaner and healthier for all to enjoy.

Wearing plastic gloves, the children roamed the shoreline with their eyes to the ground, spotting and disposing of everything from cigarette butts to broken glass.

The group – which comprised about half the school – spent an hour on the beach, and planned to analyze data gleaned from their collection back in the classroom.

White Rock Elementary is just one of numerous B.C. schools to clean beaches and river fronts throughout May as part of a new spring edition of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

The pilot program is meant to give B.C. students an opportunity to get involved in the campaign, which will be held nationally Sept. 17 to 25.

A joint conservation program from Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund, the cleanup “offers Canadians a chance to help make our rivers, lakes and oceans healthier for the communities that depend on them,” a release states.
