Surrey's David W. Scheifele (below) is one of the 2012 appointees to the Order of Canada.

A Surrey man is among 91 new appointees to the Order of Canada.

David W. Scheifele was inducted for "his contributions to improved child health care in Canada, through the prevention of infectious disease," according to a statement from the Governor General of Canada's office.

Scheifele, a senior clinician scientist at the Child & Family Research Institute at B.C. Children's Hospital, was one of just 33 named officers of the order – a designation one step higher than member – celebrating "a lifetime of achievement and merit of a high degree." Other new officers also included fellow British Columbian and politician Mike Harcourt, artist Ian Wallace and hockey star Ken Dryden.

The 56 Canadians appointed members of the order and recognized for "a lifetime of distinguished service" in a particular area included the likes of Heather Reisman, CEO of Indigo, and journalist Stevie Cameron.

Two others were named companions of the order – the highest designation.

The order is one of Canada's highest civilian honours. Since being established in 1967, more than 5,000 people have been appointed.

The 2012 Order of Canada inductees were announced Dec. 30. Recipients will be invited to a ceremony at a later date.
