Organizers of the fifth annual Walk for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in Surrey have set a goal of $60,000, nearly double the average raised in each previous year.
An increased number of teams and individuals will be participating in the Sunday, June 17 walk at the Special Events Area at Bear Creek Park.
The event begins at 10 a.m. The walk starts at 11 a.m.
Organizers promise a fun, family atmosphere with live entertainment, a raffle draw, face painting and snacks.
Proceeds will benefit the ALS Society of BC, to fund research and provide support for those living with ALS.
ALS is a fatal neuromuscular disease that affects a person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles.
When the muscles fail to receive messages, they lose strength, atrophy and die, leaving the person immobilized.
Most people with ALS lose the ability to use their legs in the first two years. Over the last decade, advances in medicine have extended the average lifespan of people with the disease by a full year.
