A Fraser Heights woman wants one of the Best Jobs in the World, and to her surprise, she’s almost got it.
Salina Siu, 24, has made the cut as the only Canadian finalist in a Tourism Australia competition that will give six people the job of a lifetime Down Under.
If she wins, it’ll mean six months in the sun from Aug. 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, $50,000 (AUD), a further $50,000 (AUD) as needed for expenses, and a Dell laptop computer.
A local social media guru, with more than 59,000 YouTube channel subscribers (with 10 million views), Siu applied for the job of Chief Funster with a 30-second video, viewable at http://bit.ly/11RdSgC
“Look at all these events I’ve attended, organized of volunteered at,” she says rapid-fire in her bedroom, wearing a mane of VIP passes and surrounded by souvenir T-shirts.
“I love social media and sharing my life online,” she adds. “I’m ready to share Australia with the rest of the world.”
If she gets the job in New South Wales, Siu believe she’s ready to become an instant Sydney VIP and would be “live-tweeting, hashtagging and posting photos, videos and interviews to share Sydney’s culture with the rest of the world.”
There are 125 international contestants shortlisted for the other five jobs, each in its own state/territory: Outback Adventurer (Northern Territory), Park Ranger (Queensland), Wildlife Caretaker (South Australia), Lifestyle Photographer (Melbourne) and Taste Master (Western Australia).
There were 600,000 registrations for the six positions.
“For round two, 150 of us have only two weeks to generate as much media exposure as possible and find high profile endorsements to demonstrate our reach and influence,” she writes in her blog.
On May 15, the second shortlist will be announced where the top three from each job (a total of 18 people) will be flown to Australia for a week-long interview process, with the final results announced on June 21.
“This is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I can’t believe it’s happening to me,” the recent SFU grad writes. “I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching trying to figure out what I want out of life and an adventure to Australia would be just the thing I need.”
