It’s not just a fundraiser for a worthwhile cause – it’s also a friendly competition among Semiahmoo Peninsula Rotary clubs to see who can raise the most.

Although this Sunday’s Hike 4 Hospice in Crescent Beach is presented by primary sponsor the Rotary Club of White Rock Millennium, it also includes participation by other area Rotarians.

And White Rock South Surrey Hospice executive director Catherine Ferguson has issued a challenge to all the clubs through presidents Scott Phemister (White Rock Millennium), Kirk Mitchell (Rotary Club of Semiahmoo), Gord Querin (Peace Arch Rotary).

This year’s Hike 4 Hospice takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 in Blackie Spit Park, on courses that begin in the park and run along the scenic Crescent Beach waterfront. Participants can register for a 1, 3 or 5 km route and raise pledge donations from friends and family members.

Funds raised will benefit programs that are offered free of charge to families by the society, now marking 30 years of serving the community.

“Without support from the community, we would not be able to run our free programs that help people cope with the advanced illness, or loss, of a loved one,” Ferguson said. “We appreciate the support that the hike has received over the years.”

Prizes for top fundraisers, as well as music and food, will be part of the family-friendly event, which will be MCed by Shell Busey and will include a free hot-dog lunch sponsored by the White Rock Millennium club.

Registration ($15 per person, $50 per family/team) includes entry into prize draws and a Hike 4 Hospice hat.
