Three South Surrey events will be among many taking place through June 8 in the city, as part of the 17th annual Environmental Extravaganza.
Two of the three are hosted by Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society, to celebrate the 26th anniversary of Sunnyside Acres’ dedication as an urban forest.
May 20, the community is invited to ‘Walk on the Sunnyside.’ Participants in the 6:30-8:30 p.m. event will learn about native trees, shrubs, wildlife and ecosystems in the 130-hectare forest; as well, about past logging activities and current conservation efforts. Binoculars are recommended, and the event will go on rain or shine.
An open house is planned for 1-4 p.m. May 25, and is to include live entertainment and naturalist-led tours.
Both events take place at the Wally Ross parking lot, off 24 Avenue between 144 and 148 streets.
On May 31, volunteers with the Friends of Semiahmoo Heritage Society will share the history of Semiahmoo Heritage Trail, a former wagon road. Local residents fought for preservation of the 140-year-old trail.
A short presentation on the trail’s history will be led by Hugh Ellenwood, archives manager of the White Rock Museum & Archives, followed by a guided walk along the trail.
Those interested are asked to meet at the southeast corner of 148 Street and 28 Avenue at 2 p.m. The event will run rain or shine.
