Volunteers needed at White Rock extreme-weather shelter

A shelter that provides a haven from extreme weather for those with nowhere else to go needs volunteers.

Volunteers are being recruited for the extreme-weather shelter located in White Rock's First United Church, 15385 Semiahmoo Ave.

The shelter provides a safe, warm place to sleep for those caught out in the cold with no where to go when an extreme-weather alert has been called.

People interested in volunteering can serve on either of two shifts – from 9:30 to 11 p.m. or from 6 to 7 a.m.

To sign up to be a volunteer, an application form from the church office must be filled out. The office is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Requirements to be a volunteer include references and a criminal-records check

The shelter and its services will be available until March 31, 2012.
