Dozens of Surrey residents rolled up their sleeves and grabbed a shovel to kick off the city’s Releaf program with an all-ages tree-planting event at Bell Estates Park.

With the help of 9th, 10th and 17th SurDel Scouts and the 21st South Surrey Scouts, city staff and volunteers planted 20 shade trees on April 15.

Since 1991, thousands of people have participated in the Releaf program, planting tens of thousands of trees.

Now in its 22nd year, the program has extended to schools, community groups and residents, who are able to plant trees and shrubs each April and October.

This month, community members will help plant more than 140 trees.
