White Rock, Surrey charities receive $10,000 for programs supporting at-risk youth

Funds awarded by Fraser Valley Realtors Charitable Foundation

Sources Community Resources Society is among six Surrey, White Rock and North Delta charities benefiting from the first round of Fraser Valley Realtors Charitable Foundation grants.

A total of 10 grants were awarded by the foundation to organizations that work directly with marginalized and vulnerable youth in the Fraser Valley. Each of the charities received $10,000 to support those efforts.

The call for grant applications was announced in March. According to a news release, requests totalling $320,000 were received, and a total of $100,000 was awarded.

Other Surrey, White Rock and North Delta recipients were Pacific Community Resources Society (Foundry Surrey), SOS Children’s Village BC, Mackie’s Place Youth Social Hub, Kids Play Youth Foundation and Options Community Services.

Charities in Langley, Abbotsford and Mission also received grants.

For Foundry Surrey, the funds will support construction of a kitchen within an under-one-roof health and wellness centre for youth aged 12-24 and families in Surrey.

Program co-ordinator Melissa Lee said the kitchen “will deliver low-barrier programming to support youth wellness and life skills development and will act as an important bridge to connect youth to other health and wellness resources within the centre.”

“We are honoured and grateful to FVRCF for their support in making integrated accessible services for youth and families in Surrey a reality,” Lee said in the release.

John Barbisan, chair of the FVRCF board of directors, said the foundation is “dedicated to transforming the Fraser Valley into a safe and supportive community for everyone.”

The foundation’s second round of grants is to be announced in the fall.
