Violet Hussey celebrated her milestone 100th birthday on Sunday Oct. 4, outdoors in the gardens at Concord Retirement Residence.

Violet, originally from Portugal Cove, Nfld., raised her children in Montreal and has been a White Rock resident since 2010.

She celebrated her special day COVID -19 style. Because extended family could not visit in person, as had been planned for some time, close friends and family recorded their birthday greetings with short videos.

Seeing faces and hearing voices of those most important in her life on an iPad screen was a long way from

growing up in a small fishing village with no running water, electricity or even a telephone in the house.

The Concord residents’ “favourite Newfie” was thrilled to hear a chorus of Happy Birthday from all her cherished friends – from a distance of course!

The family offered thanks to the staff at Concord for going to great lengths to make this a very memorable day during these most unusual times.
