For one White Rock woman, the 9th Annual Relay for Life at Centennial Park is a chance to celebrate her commitment to thrive with cancer.

Carol Daggitt was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. After five years in remission, her breast cancer remasticized, spreading to her back.

"Last year I started experiencing back pain and I found out it had spread to bones in my back and the tissue. It was extremely painful and I was very weak. I ended up having to use a walker and then a cane," Daggit said.

The 48-year-old turned to the Live Well Exercise Clinic, where, with the help of clinic director and owner Sara Hodson, she was able to build her strength for daily activities, as well as the relay.

And although she is currently receiving treatment, Daggit will be wearing a yellow survivor shirt for the relay, which takes place on June 22.

"Relay for Life is a chance to give back and celebrate the fact you are alive. There is something about being able to connect with people in similar situations and encourage each other," Daggit said.

Daggit will be a part of the Live Well Exercise Clinic relay team. The South Surrey-based clinic aims to help people with all stages of cancer stay active and healthy, as well as those with heart disease and diabetes. Carol's team will be participating in this year's Opening Ceremonies and Survivor Victory Lap, said clinic director and owner, Sara Hodson.

"Carol is someone who really lives up to our belief of thriving instead of just surviving," Hodson said. "For her, this isn't about surviving cancer and just barely hanging on, but about embracing it and deciding to thrive."

Daggit's team will join more than 33 teams who will be particpating in the relay.
