What you should know about Surrey South

First contested in the 2017 provincial general election, the riding has predominantly voted right of centre, for candidates in the BC Liberal Party, subsequently re-named BC United in 2023, although the second-highest votes in the riding have consistently gone to BC NDP candidates.

In the the 2017 general election, BC Liberal Stephanie Cadieux won the seat with 13,509 votes (50.94 per cent) to her nearest rival, the NDP's Jonathan Silveira, with 8,718 votes (32.87 per cent).

In the 2020 general election, the NDP's Pauline Greaves offered strong competition with 11,794 (or 43.06 per cent of the vote), but was still defeated by incumbent Cadieux, who won 12,970 votes (47.36 per cent).

When Cadieux resigned her position on April 30, 2022 to become Canada's first Chief Accessibility Officer, it necessitated a byelection for the riding, which was held on Sept. 10, 2022. New BC Liberal candidate Elenore Sturko defeated the NDP's Greaves handily with 5,568 (51.58 per cent of ballots cast) to 3,221 (or 29.98 per cent of ballots cast).

On June 3 of this year, Sturko resigned from BC United to sit as a Conservative, and in the upcoming election is running for that party in Surrey-Cloverdale.

This time out, Surrey South is officially a two-way race between the Conservatives' Brent Chapman, an actor, producer, broadcaster and writer; and the BC NDP candidate, journalist Haroon Ghaffar.

Where is Surrey South?

The Surrey South riding extends from Panorama Ridge area and just south of Cloverdale in the north, down to the Elgin and Sunnyside areas in the west, east to the Langley border and south to the Douglas/US border area.

The riding was created by the 2014 BC Electoral Boundaries Commission from parts of the Surrey-Cloverdale and Surrey-Panorama ridings, and was formalized in the 2015 Electoral Districts Act.
