Two circus companies will compete for attention in Surrey this spring.
Florida-based Europa Super Circus has announced dates in Surrey as part of a debut tour of Canada in May, in competition with the more established Royal Canadian International Circus.
From May 1-4, eight Europa circus shows will be performed in a Big Top tent set up in Cloverdale at Elements Casino Surrey, according to details posted to supercircus.com/city/surrey-bc, where tickets are sold for $25 and up.
"Europa Super Circus puts a modern twist on a beloved classic circus," the website promises, with tight-wire acrobat Geoffrey Berhault, Jose Ponce Ramos on the Wheel of Death, FMX Ultimate Circus riders, aerialists, roller skaters and comedic clowns.
The Europa circus tour will stop in Nanaimo and Saanich in April, before the Surrey dates, with Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kamloops, Prince George and Fort St. John also on the calendar, according to posts on facebook.com/EuropaSuperCircus.
In recent years, Surrey has been a frequent tour stop for Royal Canadian International Circus, which did 19 shows at Guildford Town Centre last May. This year's Royal Canadian dates are May 8-11, for eight shows in the mall parking lot, off 104 Avenue. Details are posted on royalcanadiancircus.ca/buy/surrey.
Based in Alberta, the Royal Canadian company’s colourful circus tent seats close to 2,700 spectators for performances by daring artists from around the world, led by ringmaster Joseph Dominik Bauer.
