Wednesday is movie night in Newton this month.

Three films will be shown for free in a series planned by the City of Surrey, starting Wednesday, Aug. 7, with Shrek at Newton Athletic Park, 9:15 p.m. start.

The screenings are free along with popcorn for all, while quantities last.

"As part of the Focus Newton project, these events aim to increase family-friendly activities and make public spaces more lively and engaging," says a news release from city hall.

The other two movies in the Newton series are The Lego Movie 2 (Aug. 14 at TE Scott Park, 9 p.m. start), and Honsla Rakh (Aug. 21 at Unwin Park, with a Sounds of Summer concert featuring Mikey Jose and Ayla Tesler-Mabé starting at 6:30 p.m.).

All movies begin at sundown, depending on weather. People are urged to arrive early to secure a good spot.
