Shakespeare isn't a tough sell, on the Peninsula at least.
Although community theatre companies have shied away from the bard in White Rock and South Surrey, the recently-formed Beach House Theatre Society may soon be doing turn away business for its inaugural production, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Aug. 15 to 19 at Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach.
Co-artistic director Rick Harmon reports that in just the first day of opening ticket sales to the public (July 2), the venture sold a total of 448 tickets.
With advance sales taken into account, the number of tickets still available for the five-day run is shrinking rapidly, making it less likely there will still be tickets available from the box office during the course of the run.
"We're confident of sold-out performances," Harmon said.
Brain child of Earl Marriott Secondary drama instructor Candace Radcliffe, and Harmon, who retired from teaching drama there several years ago, the production is planned as the first of an annual Shakespeare festival at Crescent Beach.
Actors and technicians include former students who have continued to pursue theatre as a profession, and also notable players from Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society shows.
Performances start at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine, and last until 10 p.m. The tent auditorium will accommodate some 270 audience members on lightly-padded chairs (general seating). Doors open at 6:45 p.m. each evening.
Beach House Theatre notes the production is intended for youth and adults and children and it is strongly recommended that parents not bring children under eight.
