Acclaimed photographer and educator Rick Hulbert is back to lead the Delta Photo Club’s inaugural workshop of the 2023-24 season — the first in a three-part series.
The Zoom-based session on Wednesday, Sept. 13 will serve as an introduction to “The Series Project,” building on Hulbert’s “The Power and Benefits of a Creative Image Series” workshop last December.
“Creating a series is an ideal way for a photographer to explore a subject beyond a single image. Having someone mentor the process makes it an intriguing and approachable challenge for photographers of all abilities,” according to a club press release.
In the first session of The Series Project, Hulbert will cover what constitutes an image series and show examples, before discussing the benefits of a series project, detailing the process, explaining how to create an “artist statement” and zeroing-in on the common hurdles and roadblocks photographers face when making a series.
In part two of the workshop, DPC members will produce a series with an artist statement, due in October, and Hulbert will give each photographer individualized feedback for their series. Part three will be in December and will feature Hulbert’s gallery presentation of the completed series on Zoom.
Additional details about the second and third parts of the workshop will be given at next week’s introduction.
To attend next month’s zoom workshop, you must either be a member of the Delta Photo Club (join by filling out the form at deltaphotoclub.com/member-sign-up-form; memberships cost $40/year for individuals, $70 for families and $25 for youth and students) or, to join as a guest, send an e-transfer of $10 to treasurer@deltaphotoclub.com by noon on Wednesday, Sept.13 (please include your name, email address and club affiliation with the transfer).

Hulbert, a “life member” of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a “fellow” of The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, teaches photography at Simon Fraser University and Langara College and pre-COVID led multi-day photo workshops throughout Europe and North America.
He was also chosen as one of only two photographers from North America to be invited to participate in the 2015 World Art Games held in Bratislava, Slovakia.
“Rick‘s international award-winning photography is informed by his background as a professional, award-winning and published architect and urban designer,” according to a DPC press release. “His teachings reflect his knowledge of both the history of the two-dimensional arts of drawing and painting, along with the science of human vision.”
