Streets of Newton will be blocked off during another Car Free Day event in Surrey.

Admission is free at the June 10 single-day festival, which debuted in Newton last summer.

On 137 Street at 74 Avenue, the TransLink-presented event features live music, dance and other attractions while promoting a car-free life.

This year’s entertainers include South Surrey bhangra-pop artist Luv Randhawa, the eight-piece band MNGWA (playing a fusion of Colombian cumbia music, psych rock, hip hop, salsa, reggae), Glisha, Haleluya Hailu and other artists.

A DJ and Dance Zone will feature a Higher Ground dance battle and beats by Mr. Stee.

For kids, a Family Fun Zone offers performances by comedian/juggler Matt Henry, face painting, balloon twisting, mini golf and bouncy castle.

Food trucks will be parked on the festival site, and a TransLink Zone is where people can make a pledge for a car-free summer, get involved in climate action and play the Transportation Game to win prizes. A variety of vendors will line the street, too.

“We want to encourage people to get out of their cars this summer and experience the region using transit,” TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said in a news release.

“Car Free Day is a great opportunity for everyone to visit and experience the best of their neighbourhoods using transit, walking, and cycling.”

Later this summer, similar events are planned in New Westminster (July 29, on Columbia Street) and North Vancouver (Sept. 23, Carrie Cates Court).

More details about the Surrey event are online, carfree.ca/car-free-day-surrey.

To get to the Newton festival site without driving there, plan the trip on translink.ca/trip-planner. There will be a free bike valet by the 74 Avenue stage (BEST Bike Valet).

“If you plan to drive, please utilize Car Share options like Modo, or car-pool with others,” festival planners say. “We encourage you to bike, walk, electric-scooter or use Uber/Lyft. Parking is limited, and please be respectful of businesses and neighbours and don’t park in restricted areas.”
