Peninsula talent on PNE stage

Earl Marriott student competing in Star Showdown

There are more local young performers to cheer for at this weekend’s PNE Star Showdown.

Drummer Stefan Grabowski and his band Mortal Soil will be competing in the contest semi finals this Saturday), 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the WestJet Concert Stage in the fair’s Central Park.

The Earl Marriott student and his bandmates, Michael James and Tek Leang, will be vying for the top spot with another Earl Marriott performer, dancer Angella Slaunwhite, who will perform a lyrical solo.

The PNE contest is not the first competition for Mortal Soil. The band made it to the semi-finals in the Surrey City Jam this year, alongside Marriott talent (and ultimate winner) Tommy Alto.

Grabowski – a longtime participant in the Todd Brewer School of Music who currently studies at Tapestry Music –was also in the Surrey City Jam semi-finals last year as a solo drum artist.

He has already made some positive contacts in the L.A. music scene during trips there for drum clinics, and has played at the famous Baked Potato jazz club with John Ziegler.

Mortal Soil played at the recent Jamaican Festival at Holland Park,  and is set to perform at the Surrey Youth Fest (Sept. 24).
