Pivot Theatre has a winning show with Moonglow, a comedy-laced drama about a feisty Alzheimer’s patient who doesn’t want to move into a nursing facility.

The Surrey-based company’s production of the Kim Carney play earned several awards at a regional theatre festival in North Vancouver including Best Production, paving the way for a trip to the provincial MainStage competition this summer.

The Pivot cast performed Moonglow during the North Shore Zone Festival on May 9 at Presentation House Theatre.

“We were extremely successful,” noted Margaret Shearman, Pivot’s artistic director.

“As a result of all of our hard work, we are headed to the MainStage Festival at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre to perform on July 3.”

North Shore festival adjudicator Tamara McCarthy recognized Pivot for Best Production, Best Director (Linda McRae), Best Actor in a Female Role (Val Dearden), Best Actor in a Male Role (Pascal Belanger), Best Actor in a Supporting Female Role (Kassandra Sison), Best Ensemble (Pascal Belanger, Val Dearden, Kassandra Sison, Serah Metpalli, Jim Stewart, Tristan Manning and Trinity Sullivan), Artistic Contribution by an Intimacy Director (Kyra Fequet), Best Double Threat Duet (Trinity Sullivan and Tristan Manning) and Artistic Achievement in Choreography (Halia Hirniak and Pascal Belanger).

In February, Pivot staged Moonglow at Bethany Newton United Church in Surrey, then brought the production to the North Shore festival.

Last July, Theatre BC’s 2023 Mainstage competition was held at Surrey Arts Centre, where Pivot repped the Fraser Valley Zone with a production of Perfect Arrangement, a play about gay couples posing straight at a dinner party.

Theatre BC, also known as British Columbia Drama Association, has served as the parent association for community theatre in the province since 1932.
