With spring in the air and more people heading outdoors again, Wendy Mould wants to share the joys and the struggles of sketching in the field.
The local wildlife artist is the guest speaker at the next Thursday Artist Talk hosted by Surrey Art Gallery Association.
On April 4, Mould will talk about how she sketches nature on the go, 7:30 p.m. at Surrey Art Gallery. Admission is free to those keen to learn tips for taking their sketchbook on the go and capture the wonder of nature.
It can be an inspiring experience to feel one with nature through sketching, but it can present challenges. Mould says anything is possible with the right equipment and proper preparation, even sketching while perched on a rock, kayaking in the water or settled in an airplane seat.
“Like anything, being prepared is key,” Wendy says. “I tend not to worry, as I find the struggles often result in the most memorable and rewarding sketches.”
A self-taught wildlife artist who finds inspiration on the west coast of B.C., Mould has been a presenter, teacher and artist in the Fraser Valley for more than 20 years.

Looking ahead, the next guest speaker in the series is Dylan Goguen, a mixed-media artist who deals with socio-political class themes. On May 2 Goguen will share his art practice and recent project, “Exodus of the Repressed (In-Sight),” which stems from Goguen’s Buddhist meditations upon the self.
