Conservative candidate Tamara Jansen has unseated Liberal incumbent John Aldag in Cloverdale-Langley City.
Jansen received 20,772 votes to Aldag’s 19,470.
NDP candidate Rae Banwarie finished the night with 10,389 votes. The Green Party’s Caelum Nutbrown received 3,502 votes and Ian Kennedy of the People’s Party of Canada had 925.
Voter turnout in the riding was 63.99 per cent, with 55,058 of 86,045 registered voters casting their ballots.
“Oh my goodness, it’s amazing. This team that we pulled together is the dream team,” Jansen told Black Press Media Monday night. “We’re excited to get into Ottawa and start working and see what we can do. It’s an incredible blessing.”

Jansen’s socially conservative views became an issue in the dying days of the campaign. Aldag criticized Jansen for language comparing hospices that allowed medical assistance in dying to “death camps,” comments she made during a protest at the B.C. Legislature last year.
Jansen, from a family of greenhouse owners who run Darvonda Nurseries in Langley, pledged her support for bringing SkyTrain to Langley City during the campaign.

In the riding of Cloverdale-Langley City, five candidates ran. Aldag had sought re-election. Also seeking election were Banwarie, Caelum Nutbrown (Green), and Ian Kennedy of the People’s Party of Canada.
The Cloverdale-Langley City riding was created in 2013, taking in portions of Langley, South Surrey-White-Rock-Cloverdale and Fleetwood-Port Kells.
It was first contested in 2015, with Liberal John Aldag winning the riding with 24,617 votes. The runner-up, Conservative Dean Drysdale, received 18,800 votes, followed by the NDP’s Rebecca Smith (8,463) and Scott Anderson of the Green Party, with 2,195 votes.
In that election, 54,261 of 78,189 elibible voters voted in Cloverdale-Langley City.
