Voters in the riding of Cloverdale–Langley City can head to the polls starting Friday, Dec. 6, to vote in the local byelection.
Elections Canada is hosting four advance voting days, Dec. 6, 7, 8, and 9. Advance polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (The main election day is Dec. 16.)
“Electors can find the address of their assigned advance, and election day, polling stations by visiting elections.ca or by calling 1-800-463-6868,” noted a press release from Elections Canada sent out on Dec. 3. “Due to the service disruption at Canada Post, electors will not receive a voter information card."
Elections Canada added that voters don't need a voter information card to cast their ballot. (That also means Elections Canada won't be mailing out any byelection voter’s guides either.)
Constituents can also vote early at the byelection office located at 6279 202nd Street in Langley. Voters may cast their ballot from now up until 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Langley office.
Despite the Canada Post strike, Elections Canada is still offering mail-in ballots as an option for voters.
“Contingency measures are in place, but there may be delays,” the release continues. “Electors can vote by mail by applying online by Dec. 10 at 6 p.m., and returning their special ballot using a courier option arranged by Elections Canada or returning it in person to the local Elections Canada office before polls close on election day.”
Voters do need something to prove their identity when they vote in person. Elections Canada lists three ways to prove it: 1.) show one piece of ID, a driver's licence or any other card issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial/territorial or local) with your photo, name, and current address; 2.) show two pieces of ID, one with your name and one with your address, e.g., a health card and bank statement or a utility bill and a student ID card; or 3.) if you don't have ID, you can still vote if you declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you and who is assigned to your polling station vouch for you. (For a full list of acceptable ID, visit elections.ca.)
Elections Canada urged voters in the Cloverdale–Langley City electoral district to visit their website at elections.ca to find out all the information they need to get out and vote.
“Enter (your) postal code in the Voter Information Service box for information on where and when to vote and the accessibility of (your) polling station,” instructed Elections Canada. That online portal is available by visiting elections.ca and scrolling down to the "Voter Information Service" box in the middle of the page.
Advance polls for the Cloverdale–Langley City byelection will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 6, 7, 8, and 9. On byelection day, Dec. 16, polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Elections Canada added that it is also hiring election workers “to fill various paid positions” for the upcoming byelection.
“Those interested in making an impact in their community can apply online at elections.ca or contact the local Elections Canada office for more information.”
