Another Family Art Party is planned at Surrey Art Gallery on Saturday, July 12, noon to 4 p.m.

The quarterly events offer an afternoon of art-making and performances at the Bear Creek Park facility, this time with the theme of "Imagining our Stories," inspired by the artworks in two summer exhibitions, 10 and 10: Story of Stories and Experiments in Solitude.

Everyone can attend the free, drop-in Family Art Party, where children must be accompanied by an adult.

In response to Lyse Lemieux’s mixed-media sculpture Mexico, gallery-goers can make their own colourful wire sculpture on July 12.

Artist Kiranjot Kaur will help participants create their own abstract fabric collage, and guests will also create mixed-materials collage wearables inspired by MV Williams’ textile work.

Spakwus Slolem, or Eagle Song Dancers, will offer a glimpse of Chiax, "the protocols and laws of the canoe culture of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation, through song and dance." On arrival pick up free tickets for the show, in the Studio Theatre at 1:30 p.m.

Event organizers with SAG say the art party will have a dedicated sensory-friendly space that supports "quieter creativity" with an artmaking activity, noise-cancelling headphones, soft seats and sensory toys, "all in a comfortable, relaxed setting."

Opening June 28 is the exhibit 10 and 10: Story of Stories, which celebrates Surrey Art Gallery’s 50th anniversary by pairing permanent collection artworks acquired from the first 10 years of collecting (1975 to 1985) and the last 10 years (2014 to 2024), with themes of landscape, architecture, portraiture and movement.

Also at SAG until mid-August, Experiments in Solitude is a two-person exhibition by Brittney Appleby and MV Williams featuring works in a range of materials and photographic processes.

A "summer opening" party July 5 will include the ARTS 2025 People’s Choice award announcement and more, then moves offsite at 9:30 p.m. at UrbanScreen with 5X Fest, at Surrey Civic Plaza.
