One month from now residents of the riding of Cloverdale—Langley City will go to the polls.
A byelection was officially called on Sunday Nov. 10 to elect a new MP for the riding.
The election is set for Monday, Dec. 16, with four days of advance polls running Dec. 6, 7, 8, and 9.
According to a press release from Elections Canada, a riding election office opened also on Nov. 10 at 6279 202nd Street in Langley.
Candidates Tamara Jansen (Conservative) and Madison Fleischer (Liberal) have received the official nominations to run for their respective parties. On Nov. 13, the federal NDP announced Vanessa Sharma would be their candidate, while Pat McCutcheon told the Cloverdale Reporter on Nov. 11 he will run for the federal Greens. McCutcheon recently ran for the B.C. Greens in a bid to win a provincial seat in the riding of Surrey-Cloverdale. (That riding was won by Elenore Sturko of the B.C. Conservatives).
As a riding, Cloverdale—Langley City is about 60 square kilometres with a population of more than 130,000. As of Nov. 10, there were 88,348 people on the electors list.
According to Elections Canada, Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years old on election day are eligible to vote if they: live in the riding with their home address on the electoral district list as of Nov, 11, 2024, up until election day on Dec. 16, 2024; are registered; and show proof of their identity and address. (Voters can also register at the polling station before they vote.)
The riding has been without an MP since John Aldag resigned earlier this year to run in a failed bid to win a seat for the B.C. NDP in the provincial election. (He ran in the riding of Langley-Abbotsford and lost to provincial Conservative Harman Bhangu by more than 5,600 votes.)
Jansen lost in the last election as the incumbent to John Aldag, who had in turn lost as the incumbent to Jansen in the election prior.
According to Elections Canada, a byelection campaign must run for a minimum of 37 days and up to a maximum of 51 days. The byelection for Cloverdale-Langley City satisfies the minimum condition of 37 days.
