Surrey firefighters were busy battling a brush fire in the 14200-block of Colebrook Road Wednesday evening (July 24).
Surrey Fire Service assistant chief Greg McRobbie confirmed firefighters responded to the fire around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The call was upgraded to a two-alarm fire for additional resources, as a large hay field was on fire and the winds were pushing the flames toward the farm house at the north end of the property. The fire was about 200 feet by 200 feet when fire crews first arrived, but quickly spread until roughly six acres of field were affected, McRobbie said.
Firefighters' efforts were aimed at saving the house from the flames as well as putting down the blaze, with 24 firefighters battling the fire from two aerial ladders and using hand lines as well.
Colebrook Road was closed while firefighters battled the blaze, which was reportedly mostly under control by 9:30 p.m.
McRobbie said crews were on site until close to midnight to ensure the fire was fully out.
Cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
