Nico Wynd Golf course hosted its 20th annual Memorial Charity golf tournament on Saturday (Sept. 14) with 55 competitors from the Nico Wynd Men’s Club and their guests teeing it up with an early-morning shotgun start.
Hosted by the Roberts family – the trophy is named after longtime club member, Harry Roberts who passed in 2003 – the tournament supports the Player Development Trust Fund in BC Golf’s Zone 3, Nico Wynd Men's Club media representative Ross Ruddick explained in an email.
This year’s donation will be approximately $3,000 to benefit junior golf, he added.
"Between this tournament and regular contributions from the Men’s Club, more than $65,000 has been raised to financially assist aspiring junior golfers," he noted.
BC Golf Zone 3 Co-ordinator Brent Lindberg brought three young junior golfers to go head-to-head in a strong field, with handicaps ranging from the mid 20s to scratch and plus-1 elite players.
Drew Huston carded an impressive 79 to take the junior category, while Arvin Dhaliwal and Jayden Yang were not far behind, RUddick said.
Club captain and tournament chair Graham Roberts thanked the volunteers and the many corporate sponsors and club members for their generous donations as gifts and prizes were distributed to all attendees, along with prizes for putting, long drive and closest to the pin.
The trophy was shared by Jamie Mills (low gross) and Brian Martin (low net) along with small cash winnings for themselves and runners-up Andrew Paul, Steve Roberts, Steve Adrain and Kerry Kilbey.
The Nico Wynd Men’s Golf Club play 18 hole events every Saturday and Tuesday through to the end of October when they transition to the winter schedule.
