Dedicated squash courts would help youth sports in Surrey, this writer says

This letter writer is concerned about a lack of dedicated squash courts in the City of Surrey.

Editor,

I am writing to bring attention to an important issue: the lack of squash courts in the City of Surrey. Unlike other cities in British Columbia, Surrey has no dedicated squash courts, making it difficult for residents—especially our youth—to participate in this growing sport.

Currently there is only one active squash court at a privately owned fitness club near White Rock, but this court is likely going to be redeveloped. There are no courts in Delta, and the two courts in Langley are located at a club that is being rezoned to high density at the end of the SkyTrain line. We really lack sufficient access in Surrey and the Fraser Valley.

In the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, squash will officially be part of the Games. However, without access to proper courts, Surrey’s youth have no opportunity to train and compete at the highest level.

Across Canada there is about one court for each 40,000 people, and there’s are courts in every major metropolitan city. Other cities in British Columbia have invested in squash facilities:

• Courtenay has 4 courts
• Nanaimo has 4 courts
• Victoria has 17 courts
• Richmond has 14 courts

It is time for Surrey to invest in squash facilities for the benefit of its residents. Squash is an excellent sport for juniors, helping develop skills, discipline, and fitness. It is also a lifelong sport that keeps people active year-round, making it a perfect complement to Surrey’s recent investment in outdoor racquet sports like pickleball. Additionally, squash has significant health benefits, helping combat issues like heart disease and aging. As a 74-year-old that is still actively playing for five decades I can attest to these benefits.

On behalf of all squash players and citizens of Surrey, urge the City of Surrey to address this gap and consider adding squash courts to community fitness facilities as soon as possible. Providing access would be a step toward supporting youth sports, community health, and Surrey’s growing population.
