Man charged with arson in connection to fire in Newton: RCMP

Surrey firefighters in the 7800-block of 122 Street in Newton on Friday morning, Oct. 18. A man has now been charged with arson in connection with the fire.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with arson in connection to a house fire in Newton on Oct. 18. 

The late-morning fire happened in the 7800-block of 122 Street.

A freelance photographer at the scene said two people were trapped on a balcony of the house, and were "quickly rescued by firefighters using ground ladders."

Police in Surrey responded to the call to assist the Surrey Fire Service. When they arrived on the scene, one person detained by firefighters was transferred to RCMP custody. 

Mohammad Hashimi has been charged with one count of arson damaging a property and two counts of assault with a weapon. 

He remains in custody until his next court appearance later today (Oct. 24) at Surrey provincial court.
