Drivers sit atop their sulkies Sept. 13 as they compete during the opening weekend of harness racing’s return to Fraser Downs. Races at the 5/8 oval have been cancelled for Dec. 12-13.

This week’s races have been cancelled at Fraser Downs. A “mild illness” has affected a few horses.

According to Kelly MacMillian, president of Harness Racing B.C., races on both Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 have been crossed off the race calendar.

"While the reported illnesses appear to be mild, it has resulted in several horses not being ready to race," MacMillian said. “We felt that it was in the best interest of our equine stars to give them a little time to recover fully so they can return to competition in top condition."

Harness Racing B.C. noted the move was “precautionary” as it comes on the heels of a bunch of “veterinary scratches” that occurred during both the Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 races.

Dawn Lupul, manager of racing and communications for Fraser Downs, issued a press release about the cancellations. She noted the health of the horses is the top priority for both Fraser Downs and Harness Racing B.C. She said her team was working with Harness Racing B.C., trainers, and veterinarians to ensure horses only return to racing when healthy.

“Fraser Downs appreciates the understanding and support of its fans and the racing community during this time.”

Lupul said racing will return on Dec. 19 and 20 and again on Boxing Day and Dec. 27 to close out the fall race calendar.

The four month fall race season for horses, drivers, and horsemen began Sept. 12 at the Cloverdale 5/8 oval. Each week since then, two race nights have been held at the track on Thursdays and Fridays.
