Surrey RCMP seized a loaded handgun during a traffic stop in Port Kells last week.
Members of the Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team conducted the stop July 8 around 6:30 p.m. on the 18600-block of 88th Avenue.
"The firearm along with a knife, bear spray, suspected MDMA, digital video recorder, cell phones, and the 2018 Ford F150 vehicle were seized as offense-related property," Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, Surrey RCMP media relations officer, wrote in a press release.
Police arrested the 25-year-old male driver, but released him right at the traffic stop location.
"The investigation remains ongoing as investigators work to complete the analysis of seized items and submit a report to B.C. Prosecution Service for charge approval," Sangha noted.
Sangha said police offices saw the driver committing an unspecified motor vehicle infraction, which led to the stop. After pulling the truck over, Surrey Mounties confiscated the driver's Ford along with the other items.
"Taking illegal weapons off of our streets is one of the ways officers are keeping our community safe," Sangha added. "The Surrey Gang Enforcement Team is dedicated to proactive enforcement and disrupting potential criminal activity."
