Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, including Surrey, White Rock, Delta and "areas near the water of Metro Vancouver."

A low pressure centre off the coast of B.C. "will bring strong winds beginning this afternoon," the agency posted Monday morning (Dec. 23).

These winds are expected to intensify through the evening and impact western and northern Vancouver Island, with winds increasing through the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca later in the evening, impacting East Vancouver Island including Victoria and areas near the water of Metro Vancouver, Environment Canada noted, adding wind warnings have been issued for regions where severe impacts may occur.

The system is forecast to move out of the area before Tuesday morning, but more strong winds and heavy rain are expected for the south coast of Vancouver Island early Wednesday morning, lasting through the evening, with a weaker, low-pressure system anticipated late Thursday, Dec. 26, that will spread strong winds across Vancouver Island and the south coast overnight.

Weather warnings will be issued if necessary as confidence in the storm tracks and impacts grows.
