Sudden death of South Surrey WHL goalie's dad mourned by family, team

Passing of Derek Meneghin announced after Medicine Hat Tigers' win in Calgary

A South Surrey Western Hockey League goalie is reportedly headed back to Medicine Hat, Alta., following the sudden death of his father, Derek.

Harrison Meneghin, a Medicine Hat Tigers netminder who has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week multiple times this season, returned to Surrey to be with his family after his father's death on Sunday (March 23).

News of the passing followed his team’s 5-2 victory in Calgary that earned them top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Medicine Hat Tigers announced the news on Instagram, sending their thoughts and prayers to Meneghin and his family.

"The Medicine Hat Tigers are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Harrison Meneghin’s father Derek. We send our thoughts and prayers to Harrison, his mother Samantha, his sister Georgia and the entire Meneghin family," the statement said.

Meneghin, an NHL prospect who was selected by Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, is expected to return to Alberta prior to the weekend and the Tigers' Game 1 Friday (March 28) vs. the Swift Current Broncos.
