A local doctor is off to Australia to play in a unique soccer tournament for a second time.
From July 20-27, Dr. Kamal Abdulwahab will play in the World Medical Football Championships, a tournament that combines the worlds of medicine and football, or soccer, as the sport is known in North America.
The annual gathering involves teams of medical doctors from around the world, with a conference attached.
Abdulwahab, who works at Surrey Memorial Hospital and Scott Road Paediatrics, was also selected to play in last year's tournament, in Argentina.
“The camaraderie among the players is truly remarkable," he said. "Coming together from all corners of the globe, we share not only a love for soccer but also a deep commitment to healthcare and our patients.
"This unique bond and mutual respect make the experience incredibly rewarding.”
As a physician and talented soccer player, Abdulwahab manages to bridge the worlds of sports and medicine. He says he's honoured to represent Canada on an international stage on Australia's Sunshine Coast this summer.
"It’s an immense honour to wear my country’s colours and stand among my peers from around the world," he underlined. "This event is a powerful reminder of the universal language of soccer and the shared mission of the medical community."
