It was talent night at Lord Tweedsmuir Feb. 19 as the school hosted its annual visual and performing arts event. Nearly 20 students took part in the competition.
Called “Tweedy’s Got Talent,” the event is put on by the student council along with many student volunteers.
Over the course of the night attendees were treated to acts that included singing, dancing, and musical instrument playing. For visual arts entrants, paintings, drawings, metalwork sculpture, and even an animated short were on display at the school.
Ishmeet Randhawa, a member of the student council, said the annual talent show means a lot to the kids at the school. “[It] brings everyone together … and gives students the opportunity to showcase their unique talents and creativity.”
Christina Smith, teacher-sponsor for the council, said Tweedy’s talent night requires a lot of planning and preparation.
“Our success is due to the hard work of our students,” Smith added. She noted Victoria Shepherd, student council head and the talent show’s program director, kept everyone organized and “on track these last few weeks.”
A combination of Lord Tweedsmuir alumni, teachers, and administrators judged the entries, including visual arts judges: Rachel McCallum (alumnus), Jahnek Rai (teacher), and Danielle Garbe (vice-principal). Tania Smythe (alumnus), Sim Sidhu (teacher), and Dana Miller (vice-principal) judged the performing arts side of the show.
In the visual arts component of Tweedy’s Got Talent, Jack Prentis received an Honourable Mention for his animated short inspired by the game Dandy’s World while Harkirat Sidhu’s painting “Snowy Day” was chosen as the Fan Favourite by the audience. Third place went to Meika Norman, for her metal flowers made from scrap metal. Lily McKitrick’s watercolour “The Dancing Hongsa” came second. First place was awarded to Sarah Rosner’s charcoal drawing of Lana Del Rey.
For the performing arts part of the show, Honourable Mention went to Miami Barker, who played the song “Poison” from the TV show “Hazbin Hotel” on the piano. The Fan Favourite award went to Lucas Dickson who played Heart’s “Crazy on You” on the guitar. Jayden Nery won third place for his breakdancing performance. Second place went to Ava Gill, who played John Legend’s “All of Me” on the piano. And first place went to Neelam Brar for playing piano and singing Olivia Rodrigo’s “Happier."
Tweedy’s Got Talent will be back again in 2026 and the public is invited to attend.
