Watch out weeds: Green Team tackles invasive species in White Rock

English ivy, holly removed from Ruth Johnson Park

The Lower Mainland Green Team was back in action tackling invasive species at Ruth Johnson Park Sunday (March 30).

An activity held in partnership with the City of White Rock, more than 40 people volunteered to help remove invasive plants such as English ivy and holly from the lower part of Ruth Johnson Park.

The removal helps support the 376 native trees and shrubs that were planted as part of a Nov. 9 event in White Rock last fall, a Green Team release noted.

Community members of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels participate, "forming deeper connections with one another and nature, resulting in meaningful impacts like a stronger sense of belonging, improved mental health, a sense of pride, and empowerment to take further action for the environment."

No experience is necessary to participate, the release continued, and all ages are invited to join. Educational instruction, gloves, tools and snacks are provided.
