VIDEO: Fire closes 16th Avenue between 248th and 256th Streets in South Langley

Commuters asked to use an alternate route

Police blocked off 16th Avenue in Langley between 248th and 256th Streets Tuesday morning for several hours while fire crews battled a house fire on a rural property.

Crews responded to the call at 5:20 a.m., said Langley deputy fire chief Bruce Ferguson.

“Everyone managed to get out okay – there were no injuries,” Ferguson told the Langley Advance Times.

The top level of a two-storey house on the site was completely engulfed in flames when crews arrived, the deputy fire chief said.

At the height of the blaze, black clouds of smoke covered the area nearby, making it difficult for commuters to see, Ferguson added.

Because it was a rural property, crews had to use tanker trucks to shuttle water in to extinguish the fire.

As many as six Langley fire department vehicles were seen at the scene, along with an ambulance, and RCMP cruisers.

Commuters were being directed to alternate routes, with Fraser Highway or 0 Avenue among the suggested options while 16th Avenue was closed.

Cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
