We need both school lunches and learning centres in Surrey, writer says

The South Surrey White Rock Learning Centre has fallen victim to funding cuts in the Surrey School District – and this writer would like to see that rectified.

Editor,

I just read the article in the Peace Arch News regarding the Surrey schools lunch program.

A lunch program is a great idea. It sounds like a great program. It is important for children to eat to learn.

Why is it left to the Ministry of Education? The school districts are already struggling with trying to find room for the ever expanding number of students in the Surrey School District.

Surrey is trying to close Learning Centres. They say for financial reasons. The Learning Centres have been a literal lifesaver for some of these kids.

Why is the Ministry of Children and Families not stepping up. If children are going hungry why are they not doing something about it. Why are they not funding this program?

If the Ministry of Children and Families took on the challenge of feeding children, the $8 million given to the Surrey School District by the Ministry of Education for a lunch program could be used for education, e.g. keeping the South Surrey White Rock Learning Centre open.
