LETTER: Destruction of trees in Surrey is 'devastating'

City is losing mature trees – in the face of a climate crisis

Tree cutting to make way for development is a problem in Surrey, this writer says.

Editor,

The constant destruction of mature trees in Surrey continues, even with the climate crisis going on. Surrey has no teeth in its law, and developers do not care.

My parents are living with a baseball-park-sized empty lot that used to be treed with homes. It sits empty.

Now in my neighbourhood, where we fought to save trees by changing the zoning, the destruction continues. Another lot destroyed of all living things, even the trees that lined the fence to the neighbour's house, as seen in the photos.

When will the government get tough on developers? Why do neighbours have zero rights? We move into areas for a reason, then lose the greenery that brought us there in the first place.

It is so hurtful and devastating to keep losing the things you love in your community. We all must demand more from our city.
