LETTER: White Rock should redevelop existing city hall site

Uptown site would cause too much congestion in an already congested space, writer says

The current White Rock City Hall site would be better for redevelopment than the proposed uptown hub site, this writer says. (Peace Arch News files)

Editor,

At our condo's meeting on April 7th with Darcy Dupont, the city's project manager for the proposed city hall/community hub project, we were told that the city hall property was acquired and developed for a population of 8,000 people and that White Rock's existing population is 22,000 and expected to increase to 30,000 people.

Which leads to the logic that with this increase in population we will be needing more city maintenance, more policing, more community services and more fire department capabilities. Is selling off city property that will be needed to expand these departments really an eye to the future? The city hall property is already paid for and, while there would be growing pains, the required expansion could be done right there.

As for selling property, the proposed site for the community hub at 152 and Russell itself could be sold. As for location, it makes no sense to me to be causing congestion in an already congested area. And if the city were to sell the property they propose to sell, how much will the real estate fees cost the city and how much would it cost the city to buy it back when needed in the future?
