ACTIVE ADULTS: Activities in bloom at South Surrey Rec Centre

Plenty of activities – from garden planting to bus trips – are available this spring and summer

Regardless of the colder weather this early part of spring, our Intergenerational Therapeutic Garden is in bloom with a rainbow of colours.

Although cleanup was delayed due to the cold weather, the garden is just about finished with the weeding and new plantings.

Preschoolers have sunflowers started in their planter box, along with scarlett runners and sweet peas that they are anxiously waiting to see sprout. Adult planters are also in bloom with an array of colour reminding us that spring is here.

The garden received a generous donation from our very own 55+ badminton group last week, and we are discussing the purchase a small shed for storage of our tools and a small sitting bench.

We are planting some different items in the edible boxes this year and hope to have a decent bounty to share with the community.

If you have an interest in helping us develop a garden with a therapeutic atmosphere for all ages, please contact me at the recreation centre.

• Once again the fifth annual Steve Silverton/South Surrey 50+ Badminton Tournament was a great success.

Thanks to Steve Silverton for his amazing dedication to the sport of badminton and to his badminton community, as this year we hosted 92 players and 107 for lunch.  Thank you to Black Knight, GS & Company and Red Rose Restaurant for their support and generous gifts.

• Do you feel like an adventure? Why not sign up for one of our spring bus trips?

There are history tours, wine tours, a visit to the Chinese night market and more.

Drop by the centre for more information or check out  www.surrey.ca/recreation

• If you have not tried Zumba yet, get moving and drop in to one of our three classes here on either Monday or Wednesday, for Zumba – 55+ from 1-2 p.m. – or for adult drop-in Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
