ALEX HOUSE: Many events coming up

Alexandra Neighbourhood House has a slew of events for the spring.

Are you an artist or cultural performer?

Do you have a skill, talent, food or craft that you would like to share? Would you like to help coordinate a great community event?

Join your neighbours from across the globe to have fun and support cultural learning, celebration and exchange with the Alexandra Festival 'Building Welcoming & Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN)' planning group.

Volunteers will work together to create an inspiring and fun 'cultural zone' at the festival on Saturday, May 26.

To get involved, call 604-535-0015 ext 236 or email communityprograms@alexhouse.net

• Join your neighbours at noon Wednesday, May 2 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

If you don’t know what that is, come for a scrumptious hot meal at our Community Lunch and find out. Rides are available.

Please call 604-535 0015 by 4 p.m. Friday April 27 to let us know you’re coming.

• The 38th annual Alexandra Festival is coming up fast.

Plan to spend Saturday, May 26 at the camp, celebrating the many cultures that make up our wonderful community.

As always, we’ll have a great selection of artists, artisans and crafters, a Family Fun Zone with lots of activities and entertainment for the pint-sized set, as well as first class music on the outdoor stage.

We have some great performers lined up, including David Boxcar Gates, Jim Black, The Vaudevillians, Payton Rector, Highland Dancers, Much Mo, the Peninsula Arts Foundation Showcase and lots more.

We’re also recruiting volunteers for road and traffic control, concession sales, children’s entertainers, roaming raffle ticket sellers, and of course, lots of muscle to help set up and most importantly, take everything down again at the end of the day.

Give us a call at 604-535-0015 if you’d like to help.

• Once again, our community has shown us how very generous and talented they are.

And once again, these generous donors have designed and created some one-of-a-kind quilts to be raffled at the Alexandra Festival on May 26.

The first quilt is a stunning study in black and white with red accents, created by a donor who prefers to remain anonymous.

And for the mathematically minded, the design is based on a sudoku.

It measures about 40-inch square and would be a real eye-catcher hanging on a wall.

The second quilt is a baby’s layette donated by Sandy Marantz and made of the softest Minky flannel. It includes a pillow and a teddy and all three pieces are as soft as a cloud.

The quilt has extra length to stay snug over little toes on a cold night. Raffle tickets are available at the Camp office where the quilts are on display.

The draw will take place at the Festival at 4 p.m.
