With our Alexandra Neighbourhood House Children’s Centre opening shortly at Kensington Prairie, we have been touched by what sometimes feels like an insurmountable need for affordable, quality childcare.
Our KP program is based on the Reggio Emilia approach, and the infant/toddler spaces are already filled, but we still have space available for three- to five-year-olds and school-age children (before/after school). If you are interested in our Children’s Centre at Kensington Prairie please inquire now, as we anticipate that the available spaces will also fill through early spring.
During spring break we will also be offering a day program, both as an introduction to the Reggio Emilia approach, and as an opportunity to support the increased care needs during school breaks. For more information contact our Kensington Prairie childcare co-ordinator at childcare@alexhouse.net.
n Both the Steve Nash Foundation and the Hamber Foundation awarded grants for educational materials and resources for our children’s centre at Kensington Prairie and an additional $2,000 was donated by individuals.

n Alexandra Family Place Drop-in is a wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers of infants and preschoolers to connect. Drop-in anytime between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday mornings, September-June. Information and resources on child development, health and parenting issues are always available. $4 drop-in fee.
n Daddy and Me and Mommy and Me are new AFP programs that will be offered this spring. Daddy and Me is a sing-song and circle time for dads and their little ones from birth to four years old that gives dads an opportunity to learn and have fun with their children. The cost for this six-week group (one-hour sessions) is $30. Mommy and Me is a six-week group for new moms with babies younger than one year. The adjustment to parenting is a significant life change filled with many joys, wonders, challenges and questions, and this group will address parenting and motherhood issues including attachment, child development, healthy-moms healthy-babies and self-care. n Picture our World is an exciting new project open to youth and supported adults, using digital photography and written stories to explore personal and community experiences. Using a combination of workshops, field trips and one-on-one support the group will develop their writing, digital photography and presentation skills, culminating in a special event to showcase their works.
