Toronto was the only Canadian city to place in Lonely Planet's Top 10 Cities for 2015, in the travel company's annual rankings of the world's best, brightest, cheapest, and trendiest destinations.
"The most multicultural city in the world, a bustling megalopolis where over 140 languages are spoken, promises to be extra vibrant in 2015, when an estimated 250,000 visitors arrive for the Pan American (Pan Am) Games," writes Benedict Walker, in his synopsis of Canada's largest city, which finished 10th to just barely crack the rankings.
"Ubiquitous condo towers, ageing mega-highways and the lack of a unifying architectural theme aren't likely to seduce you, but the character and flavour of Toronto's neighbourhoods just might. Expect 2015 to be another massive year for Toronto's drool-worthy restaurant scene. If nightlife is your bag, you'll love this city: the influences of nearby New York and Montreal keep things cutting-edge. Live music thrives in gritty, grassroots bars and band-rooms."
The Best in Travel 2015 rankings were released on Monday, and Canada was shut out from the Top 10 Countries list, although winner were reserved for trendier destinations than North America's or Europe's most travelled.
Singapore placed first, finishing ahead of Namibia and Lithuania.
Washington, DC finished as the world's best city to travel to in 2015, followed by second-place El Chalten (Argentina) and third-place Milan.
Lonely Planet also ranked the best regions to travel to in 2015 and a number of other Top 10s, including the best 'value destinations' which was led by Tunisia, South Africa, and Shanghai.
