She left her successful career and close friends, packed a single suitcase, gathered her two children and left.
It was July 1984 and Maryam Majedi finally escaped her abusive husband in Iran and fled to Canada.
Within two years, she had settled into her new life and had a job as a medical office assistant. Everything was good. Until she heard the news – her husband had followed her to Canada and her life was again in danger.
Majedi’s tale of courage and resilience is one of seven that will be shared by Surrey Women’s Centre April 22-28 to mark National Victims of Crime Awareness Week.
The stories, on the theme of Moving Forward, will be personal snapshots into each woman’s healing journey after escaping violence and aim to shift societal norms that silence victims of domestic violence.
