Integrated Homicide Investigation Team officers took conduct of an investigation after Surrey firefighters found a dead man inside a house fire on Jan. 5, 2025. Police now say the man's death was not suspicious.

After initially believing a body found inside a home after it was set on fire was suspicious, Surrey police now state that is not the case.

A fire broke out at an abandoned home in the 9800-block of 138 Street in Surrey on Jan. 5 around 4 p.m. A male body was discovered by Surrey fire crews after responding to the fire.

Initially deemed suspicious by police — although a cause was unknown — the case was transferred to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

In an update Monday (March 10), Surrey Police state an "extensive investigation" was conducted with the support of Surrey Fire, RCMP arson investigators and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service.

Although initially IHIT was deployed, SPS took conduct of the case again and have determined that there was no foul play in the death of the man found inside the home.

"Surrey Police Service extends condolences to the friends and family of the deceased man," the release concludes.
